Tickets increase for too-tall trucks in Virginia tunnels

Truckers passing through the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel in Virginia better break out the tape measures and yard sticks. Instead of investigating the reason big trucks are getting stuck in the Hampton Roads tunnel, authorities are stepping up the fines for too-tall trucks at the states tunnels.

On March 22, Gov. Mark Warner signed into law HB2278, which increases the fines from $85 to $500 and adds three points to a driver’s license for overly tall trucks that try to go through any tunnel in the state. The new legislation will go into effect on July 1.

The law, which was sponsored by Del. G. Glenn Oder, R-Newport News, came in response to a situation last year when authorities claimed trucks had brought traffic in the Hampton Roads tunnel to a stop more than 3,600 times from being too tall to pass through, the Hampton Roads Daily Press reported.

“We’re really going to hurt truckers financially and with points,” Oder said. “We’ve got to let them know.”

According to the Daily Press, an informational campaign has accompanied the upcoming fine increase. State workers and lawmakers are distributing informational pamphlets and flyers to truckers before the bigger citations take hold.
