Unions may split from AFL-CIO

Two of the biggest unions in the AFL-CIO were expected to announce Monday, July 25, that they’re dropping out of the organization.

The Associated Press reported the Teamsters and the Service Employees International Union are breaking away because of disagreements about how to reverse the long decline in total union membership. Both unions spend considerably more resources organizing than do many of their AFL-CIO counterparts.

Along with the Teamsters and the SEIU, members of the United Food and Commercial Workers and Unite Here groups boycotted the Sunday, July 24, session of the AFL-CIO’s Chicago convention.
