The departures of key Department of Transportation personnel continue with the ranking NHTSA honcho heading to the Department of Homeland Security.

The Associated Press reported that Dr. Jeffrey Runge, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration administrator, will resign to take a new post overseeing bioterrorism policy at the Department of Homeland Security.

Runge plans to step down as the administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in late August to take the Department of Homeland Security job, he said Thursday, July 15.

Just a little more than a day before, Federal Highway Administrator Mary E. Peters announced she was stepping down to return home to be with family in Phoenix, AZ.

Peters informed U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta Wednesday night, July 13.
