The Land of Lincoln is joining other states in saying no to the combination of teens, cell phones and cars.

A bill, SB210, now being considered by Illinois lawmakers, would prohibit any person who has a driver’s permit or a graduated license from using a cell phone while driving. The bill would allow use of the phones in emergencies, such as calling police or an ambulance.

Unlike many similar bills, the measure does not make an exception for phones used in conjunction with a “hands-free” device.

The bill was introduced by Sen. John Cullerton, D-Chicago. It is currently before the Senate Transportation Committee.
