A private company’s plan to build a truck bridge adjacent to a railroad bridge at a border crossing did not go over well with Canadian authorities.

The proposed truck bridge, sought by the Ambassador Niagara Bridge Group, would span the Niagara River from Buffalo , NY , to Fort Erie , Ontario , Canada , and cost $250 million.

Transport Canada , which first rejected the plan in October, reminded the company last week it would not conduct a necessary environmental study and the plan would not proceed because of it.

But the Ambassador Niagara Bridge Group, a subsidiary of Matty Moroun’s Ambassador Bridge Company in Detroit , has pushed ahead since October with other aspects of the design. The company is even proposing its own environmental study and a report to officials in February 2006, according to the Buffalo News.

Canadian officials have cited a 1923 law that prohibits a second border crossing within 10 kilometers – or six miles – of the nearby Peace Bridge .
