Automated replacements for user-fee decals not yet ready

Automated transponders were supposed to take the place of user-fee decals on commercial vehicles by Jan. 1, 2006, but will now be delayed.

Customs and Border Protection officials announced the replacement system will not be ready until the end of January.

The transponders are being implemented to automate and track proof of payments for the annual fees. They are similar to the ones used in the Free and Secure Trade program, often referred to as the FAST program.

Companies that have signed up for the new transponder program are being notified about how to proceed with business heading into the new year.
