U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta approved $80 million in emergency relief to repair roads and highways in 16 states and two U.S. territories that have been damaged by floods, hurricanes and other catastrophes.

Mineta said in a news release that the Federal Highway Administration will use the funds to reimburse states for costs associated with repairing or replacing damaged highways, bridges, guardrails, signs and other damaged areas.

Most of the $80 million is going toward highways that have been washed out by heavy rains and flooding, he said.

States receiving the funding are Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Utah, Washington and West Virginia.

Two American territories, American Samoa and North Mariana Islands, will also receive funding.
