Low bid in Louisiana highway project a tad more than expected

You could almost hear the jaws drop at the Louisiana DOTD when they opened bids for a project to overhaul part of State Highway 1.

Seems the low bid was $98 million above what the Department of Transportation and Development was expecting.

The Associated Press reported the DOTD will try again. This time they are trying to attract more bidders by advertising the $153 million project nationwide.

The stretch of Highway 1 in question is near Port Fourchon in a low-lying coastal area that’s prone to flooding. The state wants to elevate parts of the highway above the flood plain.
