The U.S. Army has taken delivery on a fuel-cell-powered GM crew cab pickup, making it the world’s first fuel cell-powered pickup in military service.

The modified Chevrolet Silverado, powered by two 94-kilowatt cell stacks, is capable of producing 317 foot-pounds of torque, which is the roughly equivalent to GM’s 5.3-liter V-8 engine. Acceleration is also similar to a V-8 powered production pickup; however, it produces no tailpipe emissions.

The truck was developed in partnership between GM and the U.S. Army.

The vehicle, which has a range of 125 miles, will be tested in different climates and locations as a package delivery vehicle, but will not be immediately used in combat.
