Roads were out throughout the Pensacola, FL, area and other nearby regions Thursday, Sept. 16, after Hurricane Ivan blasted through the area, according to reports from Florida and Alabama officials and media outlets.
Leading the list was the Interstate 10 bridge over Escambia Bay, which connects the east side of the city to the rest of the Florida Panhandle. Photos and video of the bridge break show the remains of a tractor-trailer that was damaged when the bridge went out. A portion of the eastbound lanes – some reports placed it at a quarter mile of pavement – plunged into the bay, while the westbound lanes were damaged.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol and media sources, bridges closed or reporting damage include:
All of the bridges were in the Florida Panhandle except the Dauphin Island Bridge.
The Patrol says other highways in Florida closed or reporting damage include:
More highways and bridges were also out, most due to debris clogging the roadway, but others because of damage related to the storm.
There were some reports that Bankhead Tunnel, which carries U.S. 90 under the Mobile River, was damaged by the hurricane, but Alabama officials told Land Line that the tunnel was closed so its floodgate could be secured. State workers are already making efforts to reopen the structure.
