Add to list of highway hazards: frozen turkeys

Truckers face numerous hazards on the highways, from rocks flung by tires to objects tossed off of bridges.

But a car driver on New York’s Long Island was recently injured by a very unusual thrown object – a frozen turkey.

Local media outlets reported that a group of youths allegedly used a stolen credit card to purchase the 20-pound frozen bird at a grocery store. One of the youths is accused of throwing the bird into oncoming traffic. It crashed through the windshield of a car, critically injuring the woman who was driving.

The New York Daily News reported that the force of the impact was the same as a bowling ball dropped from a 20-story building.

The group of youths was universally lambasted in the local press, with one publication describing them as “a heartless Long Island gang.” One 18-year-old is charged with first-degree assault in connection with the incident.
