DOT to target third-party CDL fraud in the states

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has hired a contractor to develop a model program to identify and prevent third-party CDL fraud schemes in the states.

During the past five years, DOT’s Office of the Inspector General has been involved in the investigation and prosecution of CDL fraud in 21 states, according to last year’s report, “Top Management Challenges.”

However, the agency’s current report says, “Following up on suspect CDL holders and expanding the use of covert testing of third-party examiners are areas that need considerably greater attention.”

To help achieve that goal, FMCSA has hired a contractor to work with the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators and the International Association of Chiefs of Police to review the entire CDL process.

“This review will include developing a model state program, to include the critically important covert testing and retesting of suspect CDL holders,” the report said.
