Starting Monday, Nov. 15, Canadian truckers are to begin registering their cargo with U.S. Customs before they get to the border. In December, drivers who recently immigrated to Canada will be fingerprinted and photographed at major crossings. And in January, hazmat cargo drivers will need a special security clearance.
Canadian truckers say these security measures are being introduced too close to the holiday season. If even a few more drivers are stopped, they say, it could lead to long lines at the border, according to Canadian news sources.
U.S. ambassador Paul Cellucci heard these views at a Nov. 12 meeting with Canadian truckers; he said there would be a grace period, but offered no details.
