Republican leaders say they will try to make Arctic National Wildlife Refuge drilling part of the budget bill, which would require only 50 votes to pass and can’t be filibustered, the Anchorage Daily News reports.
Interest in the project has increased since the recent price of crude oil has been at more than $50 a barrel, said Marrie Funk, spokeswoman for the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.
In 1995, President Bill Clinton vetoed a budget bill that included ANWR exploration, and last year the Senate failed by two votes to attach an ANWR provision to a budget bill.
