Show-me speed trap considers calling it quits

One of Missouri’s more notorious speed traps may soon cease to exist.

Macks Creek, a town of 267 people founded in 1872, is about 13 miles southwest of Lake of the Ozarks in Camden County on U.S. 54. It has long been regarded by regular travelers through the area as a speed trap. In fact, according to The Associated Press, at one time the community derived two-thirds of its budget from speeding ticket revenue.

However, a law passed several years ago put that practice to an end, and the town, derived of that revenue, eventually declared itself bankrupt. Now, the community operates on monthly income of about $800, The Springfield News-Leader reported.

The city’s aldermen responded by placing a question on the ballot Nov. 2: “Shall the Board of Aldermen of the City of Macks Creek create and circulate a petition to disincorporate the City of Macks Creek?”

The question passed by a vote of 64 to 55, the Camden County, MO, Clerk’s Office told Land Line. However, despite the vote, the issue is not settled.

“They are getting that community’s input on whether they would like to start a petition to see if the townspeople would like to dissolve the town,” Shana Emery of the county clerk’s office said. “They could have done a petition without asking, but they went ahead and gave the townspeople the right to decide whether they can start the petition. … It actually does not do anything.”

The next step is for the aldermen to write and circulate the petition, which would presumably lead to another vote. Emery said no one in the clerk’s office was aware whether a petition had been started yet, but she expected the alderman would act soon.
