Tractor-trailer thefts have Wisconsin officials on lookout

About seven truck trailers have been found in Wisconsin after thieves apparently unhooked the units at truck stops and stole the contents.

Capt. Dave Adams of the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Department told Land Line other trailers may also have been stolen, but so far, no arrests have been made. There’s no reason to think terrorism is involved, he added.

Apparently, no drivers were involved at the time of the theft, officials said.

“We’ve had seven reports about trailers that were unhooked and towed away,” Adams said. “The contents were stolen from flatbed trailers that were loaded with building products. We believe this is strictly an issue of theft,” not terrorism.

Two empty trailers were located recently at a truck stop at the intersection of Interstate 43 and county Highway V. One trailer, which had contained $18,892 worth of lumber, was stolen April 18 from a truck stop in Shawano County, and the other was taken from a truck stop at Barron.

The department received a tip on who had been in possession of some stolen building materials, and investigators obtained three search warrants the next day, and much of the stolen material was recovered.
