An initiative before the Assembly Transportation Committee would require all trucks over 18,000 pounds registered in New York to have front-end mirrors installed.

The bill, sponsored by Assemblyman Frank Seddio, D-Brooklyn, is intended to increase the visibility of objects and pedestrians located near the truck.

A9971 was introduced in response to an accident earlier this year in Brooklyn, NY, that killed two young boys.

Angel Estrada, 10, and Victor Flores, 11, were waiting to cross the street in Park Slope when they were struck by the back wheel of a dump truck and dragged several feet before witnesses alerted the driver to stop, WCBS-TV in New York City reported.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2002, more than 1,900 people were killed in front or on the right side of large trucks. And 17,000 people were injured.

Seddio said thousands of deaths and injuries could have easily been prevented with the installation of two inexpensive front-end mirrors.

“The total cost of this mirror is $58 plus tax for one mirror. Approximately $120 to install these mirrors on a vehicle, that could absolutely prevent accidents and probably prevent deaths,” Seddio told the news station.
