Buckle up, Rover

There are plenty of places where a trucker might get pulled over for not wearing a seat belt. What you may not know is that there are even a few where you could be stopped for failing to buckle up your dog.

City officials in Santa Fe, NM, have been working for some time on an ordinance that would require restraints for Fido. At first, the draft ordinance would have required seat belts for dogs inside of vehicles. But the latest version would require restraints only for pets riding in the back of pickups, Mike Trujillo of the city’s Public Safety Committee told Land Line.

Santa Fe has taken plenty of heat – and been the butt of many jokes – because of the proposed shepherd seat-belt rules. But the town is hardly alone in considering the idea. In fact, it’s becoming fairly common.

According to the Aberdeen American News, California, Florida, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Oregon, Rhode Island and Virginia all have dog restraint laws. Related measures have been considered in Tennessee, Delaware and South Dakota.

The doggie seat-belt craze has even crossed the big pond. Police in Germany fined a driver recently for failing to restrain his dog, Bobbie, while traveling near the German Alps, according to local press reports. Police said the law was needed because “anything that flies forward when you brake sharply can cause serious injury.”

Trujillo said Santa Fe’s City Council is expected to vote on the latest version of its ordinance May 26.
