Two measures before an Iowa Senate panel that sought to change speed limits in the state have died.
The Senate Transportation Committee failed to vote on either proposal prior to the deadline for bills to be forwarded to the full chamber for consideration, essentially killing the bills.
A bill introduced by Sen. Steve Kettering, R-Lake View, sought to push the speed limit for all vehicles on the state’s four-lane expressways from 65 mph to 70 mph and from 55 mph to 60 mph on all other primary highways. Under that bill, SF2033, cities would maintain the authorization to set lower limits.
Sen. Maggie Tinsman, R-Bettendorf, on the other hand, introduced a measure targeting truck speeds. Her bill, SF2035, sought to lower the maximum allowable expressway speed from 65 mph to 55 mph for vehicles with a gross weight exceeding 10,000 pounds.
