Louisiana lawmaker seeks split speeds

A Louisiana state representative has filed legislation that would eliminate uniform speed limits on the state’s highways.

Rep. A.G. Crowe, R-Slidell, filed the bill this past week, which would lower the speed limit for large trucks by 5 mph, The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported. All other vehicles would be allowed to continue to travel at the current posted limit.

Under the proposal, trucks would be restricted to 65 mph on interstate highways and 60 mph on divided multilane highways.

The bill – HB546 – has been assigned to the House Transportation, Highways and Public Works Committee.

Meanwhile, Rep. Pete Schneider, R-Slidell, has filed HB273, which would require all drivers to travel at least 50 mph on interstate highways where the speed limit is posted at 70 mph.

Schneider told the newspaper the bill does not apply to areas of the interstate system in Louisiana where the posted speed is less than 70. Schneider said he would like to see a maximum 20 mph differential for traveling on interstates and would probably amend his bill to do that.

State lawmakers will likely consider these proposals once they converge in Baton Rouge March 29 for the start of the legislative session, which runs until late June.
