Arizona Senate OKs 80 mph on rural interstates

The Arizona Senate voted March 9 to let state transportation officials post 80 mph speed limits on rural stretches of interstate highways where the limit is now 75 mph, The Associated Press reported.

The 18-12 vote sends the proposal to the House.

The current 75 mph limit applies to interstates outside urban areas and in areas where transportation officials decide that terrain and other conditions permit cars to travel that fast. Otherwise, lower limits apply.

Supporters of the bill, SB1221, said the Arizona Department of Transportation should be permitted, but not required, to raise the limit in those areas to 80 mph.
