AMSA announces 2003 fleet safety winners

The American Moving and Storage Association recently announced the winners of its Fleet Safety Contest for 2003.

Awards were presented to two fleets (one for the fleet with over 100 million miles, one for the fleet with under 100 million miles, respectively) each in three categories: fleet safety, fleet safety improvement and safety initiative.

The Fleet Safety Awards went to United Van Lines LLC of Fenton, MO, and Security Storage Co. of Washington, DC. This award recognizes carriers with the best weighted combination of the lowest Department of Transportation recordable accident rate per million miles of vehicle operation, lowest vehicle and driver out-of-service rates and lowest cargo claims ratio.

The Fleet Safety Improvement Award recipients are Atlas Van Lines Inc. of Evansville, IN, and Security Storage Co. of Washington, DC. This award recognizes the most significant improvement in the carriers’ DOT recordable accident rate from the previous year.

Atlas Van Lines and Security Storage Co. also received the Safety Initiative Awards in their respective categories. This award recognizes carriers whose overall safety program is judged to be outstanding in eight major safety areas, including safety program orientation, training, accident investigation, inspection and maintenance of equipment, and driver selection procedures.

The American Moving and Storage Association, headquartered in Alexandria, VA, is the national trade association representing the nation’s moving and storage companies. The top fleets will receive the awards during the 2004 AMSA annual convention and trade show March 31 through April 3 in Bal Harbour, FL.
