Bill would take power over DOT away from Alabama’s governor

Alabama’s Legislature is considering a bill that would take control of the state’s DOT away from the governor.

HB172, introduced by Rep. Cam Ward, R-Alabaster, would create a state transportation commission. While the governor would appoint the members of the commission, they would have to be from specific districts in the state, and they would appoint the director of transportation, who now directly reports to the governor.

The proposed system is similar to the one employed now in Missouri, where a commission operates the state’s DOT and hires the director.

The Alabama bill is likely to be debated next week in the state’s House, The Birmingham News reported. Ward told the newspaper he thinks the bill’s chances are good.
