Houston operation cracks down on big rigs

More than 16 tractor-trailers were put out of service and numerous drivers were arrested Feb. 26 as the Houston Police Department's truck enforcement officers monitored Highway 225 traffic, according to the Pasadena Citizen.

"Putting these trucks out of service really hurts the company, and their insurance rates go up," said police Sgt. C.J. Klausner. "But these trucks are dangerous."

Houston police set up their operation off Broadway Street and state Highway 225 from 8 to 11 a.m. That particular location allows officers to check the numerous trucks passing through Pasadena for possible hazmat violations.

One out of every two trucks passing through the enforcement team's 57-point inspection were shut down. Truckers were ticketed for violations such as unsafe load weights and “unkept” vehicles, the newspaper reported.

"Our motto is safe trucks driving safely. Truck companies have never disagreed with us on that," Klausner said.

The Houston Police’s truck code enforcement division began in 1999 and performs surprise freeway checks monthly. Truckers are pulled off their route at random and without probable cause.

Those who pass officers' tough inspections are rewarded with a green windshield sticker that allows them to be inspection-free for 90 days and garners a good report on a statewide database.

"We not only have to punish people, but reward them, too," Klausner said.
