A Muslim truck driver has filed a federal lawsuit that claims J.B. Hunt fired him for refusing to transport a load of Budweiser beer, The Associated Press reported.
Ibrahim Barzinji, 42, said he told managers that hauling the alcoholic beverage violated his religious beliefs.
Barzinji filed suit earlier this week. He had already received permission to sue from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which is the first step required for filing Civil Right Act suits.
J.B. Hunt is one of the largest publicly held U.S. truck and train companies. The company declined to comment on the lawsuit.
A truck driver since 1999, Barzinji said he never imagined transporting alcohol would be part of his job because he assumed beer companies trucked their own product.
