Cargo theft measure gets panel's OK in California

A Senate committee has voted unanimously for a bill that targets cargo theft in California.

Under the bill, AB1814, a person who steals cargo off a truck would be guilty of grand theft.

AB1814 would apply the charge of grand theft to anyone who steals more than $400 worth of freight. The bill, introduced by Assemblywoman Jenny Oropeza, D-Carson, would apply to any cargo that has been loaded into a trailer, railcar or cargo container, whether it is awaiting transport or is already in transit.

The bill previously passed the Assembly, and was approved 6-0 on June 15 by the Senate Public Safety Committee. It is now in the Appropriations Committee.
