Change lanes or pay the fine

While truckers have traditionally made room for police officers writing tickets and emergency personnel working wrecks out of common courtesy, the practice had better continue in Tennessee.

The Tennessee legislature passed a law in 2003 making it mandatory for all drivers to make room for emergency vehicles. This includes actions such as changing lanes to provide additional room, slowing down if an alternate lane is not available and even pulling over to the side of the roadway to allow emergency vehicles to pass.

Before the law went into effect July 1, officers in Tennessee had been instructed to write warning tickets to educate drivers on the impending law. Now that it is in full force, drivers face a possible fine of $50 for each violation.

It’s impossible to tell how many tickets have been written under the new law, as the state does not track citations issued by type, according to a Tennessee Highway Patrol spokesman.
