Arizona's I-40 focus of truck inspection effort

Truck drivers traveling through northern Arizona this week will receive extra attention along Interstate 40 in the Flagstaff and Williams area.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is conducting a weeklong detail dubbed “Project Safe and Secure Trucks.” The second-annual effort is focused on homeland security issues.

According to a statement from the department, about 40 officers specializing in commercial vehicle enforcement have converged in the area to check commercial vehicles for driver credentials, hours-of-service violations and any “unusual circumstances” involving trucking operations.

The extra enforcement, which kicked off Monday, includes concentrated roving patrols. This project is being carried out in conjunction with advanced officer training happening Tuesday. The advanced effort enables officers to receive special training on terrorism and other related enforcement matters.

On Wednesday, a special checkpoint will be in place in the Parks Rest Area on I-40 (mile marker 181.9). All eastbound and westbound traffic will be diverted into this area, where officers will carry out safety inspections. Thursday’s roundup will shift the focus to buses in and around the Williams area.

The detail includes personnel from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, American Red Cross and Arizona Trucking Association.
