Alabama to honor Reagan with highway name

A portion on Interstate 65 in Alabama will be renamed the “Ronald Reagan Memorial Highway” in honor of the former president, who died recently after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease, Gov. Bob Riley’s office announced.

“The Ronald Reagan Memorial Highway will help remind all Alabamians, especially future generations, of the legacy of freedom President Reagan left us and the entire world,” Riley said.

The name was applied to the portion of the highway that extends from Birmingham to Decatur, AL. It became official July 4, the 20th anniversary of a visit by President Reagan to Decatur, where he took part in a local festival.

All of I-65 from the Tennessee border to Mobile is already designated “Heroes’ Highway” in honor of Alabama veterans, according to the govneror’s office. The portion named for the former president will carry both names.
