Texas legislators oppose toll-road plan

Two Texas Republicans and a Democrat are opposing a 50-year plan by GOP Gov. Rick Perry to build 4,000 miles of Texas toll roads and rail lines, The Associated Press reported.

Democrat Robby Cook, a member of the Texas House of Representatives, said he wanted to slow or cancel the plan, which could cost up to $183 billion. The project calls for a corridor crisscrossing the state with separate highway lanes for passenger vehicles and trucks, passenger rail, freight rail and dedicated utility zones.

The state is "moving way too fast. I don't think the general public is aware of all the information they need to know and whether or not this is good for all areas," Cook said in Sunday's editions of The San Antonio Express-News.

Meanwhile, the Fayette County Commission said in May that the corridor "would negatively affect rural Texas, splitting farms and ranches, uproot wildlife, have a negative impact on the local economy and would create pollution and trash."

County Judge Ed Janecka, a Democrat, called the plan "a joke" because of possible land acquisitions, adding that he doubts it would relieve congestion in cities, the Houston Chronicle reported.
