Mexico's Agriculture Ministry announced a ban Feb. 24 on all live poultry imports and some other poultry products from the United States due to the discovery of avian influenza in Texas, according to news reports.
Mexico had previously banned only poultry from 10 U.S. states. Other U.S. poultry banners include the European Union, South Korea and the Philippines.
The recent strain of avian influenza discovered in a flock 50 miles outside of San Antonio was reported
Monday as "highly pathogenic" – or able to cause disease. The 6,600-bird flock was destroyed and buried.
Meanwhile, Tyson Foods issued in a statement that the firm, along with other poultry companies, is "taking the finding very seriously and will adopt every possible measure to ensure the disease remains isolated."
