Drivers passing through California may soon face one less highway hazard – in this case, teens behind the wheel using cell phones.
SB1582, introduced by Sen. Debra Bowen, D-Redondo Beach, would make it illegal for any driver under 18 years of age to use a cell phone while driving. The bill would allow an exception for emergency calls.
The bill is similar to a law in Maine, according to The San Diego Union Tribune. New Jersey and New York ban all cell phone use behind the wheel unless the driver uses a hands-free device.
Bowen's bill is now before the Senate Rules Committee.
