Illinois lawmaker targets mobile phone users who cause accidents

Wireless phone users in Illinois could face an additional fine if they commit a traffic violation under a proposal making its way through the Illinois House.

HB5020 would fine a driver $79 for use of a wireless phone while committing a traffic violation. The bill also forbids mobile phone use by drivers who have a learner’s permit or who have held their license less than a year.

The bill, introduced by Rep. John Millner, R-Carol Stream, has an exception for emergency calls. It is now before the House Transportation & Motor Vehicles Committee.
