DOT: No additional Amtrak funding

The Bush administration thinks increased federal funding for Amtrak cannot be justified without significant reform, according to a Feb. 11 statement by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The administration’s budget requests $900 million for fiscal year 2005, but it would support “funding of up to $1.4 billion if the significant reforms included in the president’s plan were enacted,” the statement said.

“Americans expect meaningful reforms to improve service and accountability for their tax dollars. The president’s proposal before Congress would accomplish these goals and place Amtrak on a course toward long-term viability,” DOT said.
