Janklow begins serving time

Former South Dakota governor and Republican House member Bill Janklow walked into the Minnehaha County Jail the morning of Feb. 7 to begin serving a 100-day sentence for second-degree manslaughter.

Janklow, 64, was convicted in December for the Aug. 16 traffic accident that killed Minnesota motorcyclist Randy Scott. He resigned his House seat effective Jan. 20.

A judge sentenced Janklow last month to 100 days in jail but allowed him to begin community service after 30 days. That means Janklow will be able to spend 10 hours a day, six days a week outside the jail but will be behind bars each night.

The judge also said the felony manslaughter conviction would be removed from Janklow's record if he completed a three-year probation.

Meanwhile, Janklow has nearly $1 million in a campaign spending account, according to a report filed with the South Dakota Secretary of State's Office quoted by The Associated Press.

The former governor told KSFY television of Sioux Falls he would use the money to support political candidates and "do good things with it."

A campaign spending report shows Janklow made two donations, including $100 to the Multiple Sclerosis Society and $200 to the Brandon Veterans Memorial. It also indicates a debt of $19,000.

Janklow will live in a standard area of the jail for 100 days. His bed will be two steps away from his bathroom. He will have his own cell, be able to shower by himself, watch TV, visit with friends and family through a closed circuit system and make collect calls, news sources reported.
