The mayor of Fresno, CA, is proposing making state Highway 99 the longest toll road in the state, press outlets reported recently. The proposal is designed to cut back on pollution and help raise funds to repair the road.
Highway 99 runs through the San Joaquin Valley, from the area east of the San Francisco Bay southeast, eventually landing in the northern portion of the Los Angeles area. According to The Modesto Bee, more than 10,000 trucks pass over the stretch of highway daily.
Mayor Alan Autry’s proposal was generated in part by Operation Clean Air, which he is associated with, The Fresno Bee said. The organization is devoted to reducing pollution in the valley.
The proposal would have to be approved by the California General Assembly to move forward.
