You might want to think twice before tossing that butt out the window as you pass through California.
The state’s Assembly is considering a bill that could fine anyone – including truckers – for tossing a cigarette butt out the window of a vehicle, or disposing of it in anyway that involved it being discarded on private or public property outside of an ashtray.
AB2694 was introduced by Assemblyman Russ Bough, R-Yucaipa.
The fines under the bill would be heavy: A first offense could result in a fine of $1,000 to $2,000; a second offense could bring a $2,000 to $4,000 fine; and a third conviction could cost a smoker anywhere from $4,000 to $6,000.
In addition, if a person were convicted, a court could also sentence the smoker to collecting trash for at least eight hours.
The bill is now before the Assembly Committee on Public Safety.
