Leadfoot governor 'fesses up

Ever hear someone complain about truckers driving too fast on the Pennsylvania Turnpike? One person we suspect you’ll never hear make that complaint is the state’s governor.

That’s because Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell admitted this week that he ordered his driver to push his vehicle well over the posted speed limit on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, media outlets reported. On nine occasions, the car exceeded 100 mph.

His admission came well after published reports about the speeding incidents, which his office initially denied. Later, he admitted to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that he had ordered his driver, a state trooper himself, to let the car “fly.”

The governor has said he will stop the speeding. But that hasn’t stopped more than a few people from having some fun with the incident, including Late Night talk show host David Letterman, who did a recent list of “Top 10 Signs Your Governor Is Nuts." The first, item: "State has a minimum speed limit of 135 mph."

The news comes just as the state’s Department of Transportation and State Police start a new program – to crack down on people who speed in work zones.

"We want motorists and truckers to slow down and obey the work zone speed limits, turn head lamps on, and leave adequate space between vehicles for emergency braking when they enter a work zone," Rep. Mario Scavello, R-Pocono, told the Pocono Record.
