A bill that would have allowed illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses in Illinois has died in the state’s House of Representatives.
HB4003, introduced by Rep. Edward J. Acevedo, D-Chicago, would have allowed an immigrant who is not eligible for a Social Security number to obtain a license if that person met requirements contained in the bill. The bill would not have applied to commercial driver’s licenses.
The bill would also have placed other limitations on the illegal immigrants who obtained licenses. For example, their license would look distinctly different from other driver’s licenses in the state, and illegal immigrants would not be able to use the licenses to obtain a firearm.
Acevedo told The Quad Cities Times the law could apply to 300,000 people in the state.
The House, after what The Chicago Sun Times described as a “bitter debate,” voted 68-43 against the measure, killing it. Six lawmakers voted “present,” in effect abstaining from voting on the bill.
