A Missouri trucker was killed Monday night in a fiery accident on Interstate 70 in St. Louis.
Clarence Fannon, 63, of Maryville, MO, died when his tractor-trailer collided with an abandoned car parked on the shoulder under the Union Boulevard near mile marker 243.
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Fannon was eastbound on I-70 hauling a shipment of paper products when his rig struck the parked car shortly before 7:30 p.m.
The semi then went out of control and struck a bridge pillar, triggering several fuel-related explosions.
“You can’t even tell it’s a tractor-trailer,” a firefighter at the scene told the newspaper.
The westbound lanes of the interstate were reopened shortly after the accident, and one eastbound lane was reopened about 10:45 p.m. Monday.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident and no other injuries were reported.
The abandoned car struck by Fannon’s semi was seen parked on the highway shoulder at 5 a.m. Monday, Don Houston, who drives I-70 daily, told the newspaper.
“A few people were swerving to avoid hitting it this morning.”
