The man police say is responsible for gunning down five workers at a West Chester, OH, trucking company office entered a not guilty plea Nov. 20 and said he would like to defend himself.
Suspect Joe Eschenbrenner Jr., who goes by the name Tom West, was laughing and smiling in court while the charges were read.
West refused to sign a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, but the judge signed the plea for him so West can be mentally evaluated.
West is charged with two counts of aggravated murder and four counts of attempted murder. West is accused of shooting five men at Watkins Motor Lines Nov. 6, killing two. He is being held without bond in Butler County because the judge considers him a flight risk.
