A Los Angeles, CA-based household goods mover was fined nearly $303,000 by state regulators for rule violations and service complaints ranging from theft to failure to show up for planned moves, The Los Angeles Times reported.
Starving Students Inc., active in 10 states, was fined $20,903 in additional license fees, taxes, and penalties for 1998, 1999 and 2000. It also was fined $282,000 for consumer violations and operating during periods of suspension.
According to The Times, the fine assessed by the California Public Utilities Commission would be reduced to $199,500 if restitution were made to customers identified in the evidence supporting the decision.
The firm also was cited for underpaying license fees and for failing to file proof of insurance with the commission.
Starving Students founder Ethan Margalith told the newspaper the service problems resulted from rapid expansion.
