Truck bomb kills 29 in Russia

A truck bomb ripped through a government compound in northern Chechnya on May 12, killing at least 29 people and wounding more than 100 in an attack blamed on separatists, The Associated Press reports.

Federal Security Service chief Nikolai Patrushev said on state-run television a truck carrying explosives blew up after it was stopped at a security barrier about 30 yards from a concrete wall that protects the government buildings. The blast left a crater up to 53 feet wide and 6 feet deep and shattered windows 500 yards away.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Transportation Security Administration and the FBI have warned that similar incidents could occur in the United States, citing the Oklahoma City bombing and more recent incidents involving fuel trucks exploding via remote control devices in Israel.

The Russian bombing in the town of Znamenskoye destroyed the two-story building housing the office of the Federal Security Service, the intelligence agency that leads Russia's campaign in Chechnya. It also damaged four nearby administrative buildings and eight houses, officials said.

At least 29 people were killed and 197 wounded. The head of the Emergency Situations Ministry for southern Russia, Lt. Gen. Ivan Teterin, said 120 were injured, including 57 seriously.
