Hawaii legislators hang up on cell phone bills

Two bills that would have required hands-free devices for cell phones in cars have died in Hawaii.

HB49 and HB733 would have prohibited hand-held cell phone use while driving. Talking on a phone equipped with a “hands-free” device would have still been permitted. The two bills called for different fines for the offense.

Both bills never made it out of committee and to the House floor before the session ended May 1.
