The California Assembly will vote May 6 on a bill that would create a new class of highway with a preset speed limit of 45 mph.
AB872 would place the speed limit on urban, divided and restricted-access arterial highways. The state’s DOT or local authorities could increase the speed limit under the bill if the increase were based on an engineering study showing the speed would be safe.
According to The Los Angeles Times, one example of the roads that would be covered under the bill include Westlake Boulevard (state Highway 23) and Lynn Road in Thousand Oaks, CA.
The Assembly Appropriations Committee approved the bill by a vote of 24-0. A second reading before the full Assembly was set for May 5, with a third reading, or vote, scheduled for May 6.
