Florida truckers threaten strike over left lane restriction

A group of truckers in Collier County, FL, are considering a strike to protest a left-lane restriction in the county, The Naples Daily News reported April 30.

The newspaper reported the drivers, who primarily haul dirt, are vital to the region’s economy, playing a vital role in homebuilding, road work, school construction and other development work.

Some local residents expressed concerns to county officials about dump trucks in traffic during rush hour. In response, the county’s governing body passed a new regulation that would ban trucks over 5 tons from the left lane of four lane or larger roads.

“A strike is a possibility,” Teresa Fillmore, the owner of Dixie Trucking Inc. in Naples, told the newspaper. “The drivers had a strike a couple of years ago over rates. I think what they are trying to prove is this town would shut down without trucks.”

Collier County is along the Gulf Coast in southwest Florida.
