Alaska bill would put fee on studded tires

A bill in Alaska would charge drivers a $10 fee for every studded tire on their vehicles.

HB173 would apply the fee to the sale, transfer or storage of studded tires. The bill is currently before the House Transportation Committee.

However, The Associated Press reported March 26 that the bill had stalled in the committee in the face of opposition from some legislators, the tire industry and others.

The state’s governor, Frank Murkowski, said the bill would allow the state to recoup some of the cost of repairing highways damaged by the tires, The AP said.
