A Rhode Island House bill permits police to rig cameras on roadways as a deterrent to red-light runners.
H5451, written by state Rep. Peter T. Ginaitt, D-Warwick, permits state and local authorities to use cameras for enforcement of traffic signals.
With the new authority, a red-light running vehicle's license plate number is captured on camera and a ticket is mailed to the registered owner, Ginaitt wrote. The fine would be $100, and the offense would be treated as a parking violation.
