Texas bill regulates junk e-mail

Texas truckers tired of junk e-mails may have reason to rejoice.

State Sen. Bob Duncan, R-Lubbock, has sponsored legislation that would require unsolicited e-mails, or “spam,” to be properly labeled in the subject line to indicate its contents. Also, the e-mails cannot have false or deceptive information in the subject line.

“What we’re trying to do is give consumers an opportunity to reject e-mails they don’t want, particularly those that contain pornographic material,” Duncan told Austin’s News 8 television.

The bill would create a civil and criminal penalty against spam. Violators could potentially be fined $10 for each unsolicited message.
