Bill to create southwest Florida toll roads is killed

A bill in Florida that would create a transportation authority to acquire property and take out bonds to fund new toll roads in the southwest part of the state is being withdrawn, The News-Press reported March 13.

HB257 was introduced by state Rep. Mike Davis, R-Naples, in February. Under the bill, the authority would operate in Collier and Lee counties, which lie along the state’s gulf coast north of the Everglades.

Davis told the newspaper he would withdraw the bill after commissioners in Lee County requested he do so. Sen. Burt Saunders, R-Naples, said he would do the same for the measure in the Senate.

County commissioners who requested the bill be killed said they wanted more local input into the authority before moving forward.
